China: We're pledging to be carbon neutral by 2060.
Commentator: That's a powerful pledge. It will be the fastest any country has ever come down from peak oil - If they follow through of course.
Me (a good progressive): Wow, that's a welcome surprise announcement. City of Edmonton, why can't you be ambitious like that?
Edmonton: We're doing our best.
Me: No, do better. Or I'll demonstrate at council again.
Ed: Sure, how about some denser buildings in your neighbourhood.
Me: No, absolutely not. It wrecks the character of Old Strathcona.
Ed: Okay, well we were thinking about a new solar farm...
Me: No, it's in a bad area and will hurt wildlife and trees.
Ed: We'll do another assessment, but it doesn't seem particularly bad.
Me: I don't care, it's on land with the oldest First Nations habitation in Edmonton. You absolutely need them to say yes, and I hope they don't.
Ed: Okay, we can think outside the box. What about purchasing clean energy from BC? What about nuclear?
Me: NO! BC's extra clean energy comes from that new damned dam, and nuclear is the devil. How is this so hard!? No dense cities, no solar farms over trees, respect indigenous rights, don't displace people with dams, and no nuclear! We're ready to protest each point.
Ed: Okay, well we'll try...
Me: If only you could just make bold action on climate change like China.
Ed: ...
Context: I've received requests by Strathcona Community league to protest both the new apartment building and the solar farm recently. cf. Enoch Cree vs. Xinjiang, Site C vs. Three Gorges, new nuclear ideas vs. nothing...
