Put Ya' Damn Phone Away!

Saturday's post was stupid and distracted me from better things I could have been doing. I skipped Sunday almost to prove a point to myself. Now I'm back.

Last year I saw Rigoletto at the Jubilee auditorium. Can't say I loved it, but it has a famous song in it that was done really well, La Donna e Mobile. If you want to see what it looks like, or just hear a good version of it, check out these great videos here, or here. Or, if you want a really shitty recording of the last 8 seconds, ask the idiot in front of us who fiddled with their phone for 30 seconds before capturing their prize.

I'm willing to bet a fair bit that they enjoyed their life less because they fell for the idea that "pics or it didn't happen" was actual legal precedent. But I could be wrong, maybe they fall asleep smiling every night after watching those dark, echoey eight seconds. I can still say with certainty it ruined the whole night for me.

On Sunday I was in Banff and got to see skijor, a sport where people do water-ski style tricks while being pulled over the snow by a horse. Or, rather, I got to see them set up for skijor before a wall of hands went up to get a video to prove to their friends over coffee the next morning that they aren't lying about their weekend. Too bad the videos will, again, be shit, because all anybody not in the first row would have seen was a row of hands.

I went to two weddings this summer, before one, they reminded everyone about the professional photographer, and kindly ask that we live in the moment and not take photos. For one of those weddings, then, I could even see the bride walk down the aisle.

So, for the first time, I'm breaking my habit of posting photos I took myself. Here's a great photo from the skijor of some of the athletes I saw. Took be about two minutes to find it on Facebook.

Don't forget to breathe.

I had a rough week before this, to be fair. Although at the opera there are no excuses. Your phone lights up the dark space and there are only about a dozen signs telling you not to.

You know, I have had this conversation a few times in the past year, and I was also on that side. But after ranting about this for a while, I realized that I love looking at beautiful pictures and when I see something beautiful sometimes I want to make something beautiful. So why shouldn't we all be trying to take the best pictures we can. I get that not all of my pictures turn out great, and that I'm not specifically talking about taking pictures at wonky events, but I enjoy the process of trying to capture a moment. That being said, I agree that I often see people filming live events and blocking the experience for those behind t…
