In Defence of Daylight Savings Time

Nothing is more fashionable these days than to shit on daylight savings time. At best in seems to be coasting along because of some status quo bias. And I know a lot of people who want it done away with. Bad for sleep, bad for car collisions, cardiac arrest, agriculture, you name it.

Now I'll admit that I didn't enjoy getting up at 6:00 this morning when my body thought it was 5:00, but I've got an admission to make, I actually enjoy daylight savings time. This isn't some grand argument for why it's objectively better, I just like it. I lived for a year in Korea where it isn't a thing, and I couldn't help feeling that the sun always set far too early in the summer. So other that the one day of discomfort, I'm more than satisfied with the system here.

When I think about some of the happiest times in my life, it's late nights in summer spent in the waning sunlight. Lord know I could use it more at 9:30 by the barbecue than at 4:30 in the morning. At the same time, I think it's tough on me mentally to get up when it's still dark outside, so in the winter I'm perfectly happy to shift things so the sun is rising early(ish) for as long as possible.

In short, I'm perfectly happy to be "wrong" on this subject. Lay it on me with the best arguments against, but I'm happy with the status quo.

Now I'm going to bed, because I'm bloody tired.
